Dead or Alive: How to Tell if Your Grass is Dead... or Just Dormant

Bitter cold temperatures and scorching hot temperatures can be difficult conditions for us to endure as humans... but imagine what a number it can do on our lawns too.

Sometimes it can kill off our lush greenery entirely (e.g. DEAD grass), but other times it can just put our yards into a bit of a holding pattern until the weather becomes more favorable (e.g. DORMANT grass).

How is it possible to tell which is which? Our Xtreme Green Grass Xperts explain the difference between DEAD grass and DORMANT grass below:

Dead Grass vs. Dormant Grass
Dead grass can be a bit difficult to detect, especially when the current climate is really hot or unbearably cold. If you are trying to identify whether your grass is dead or just dormant during the winter, you may have to wait until closer to springtime to test it.

One of the best ways to tell if your grass is dead during the summer, however, is to keep watering it. Ample irrigation will allow your yard to turn green in the areas where it is still thriving. If your lawn returns to green, it means your grass was just dormant. The brown patches which do not transform after being watered are what can be considered dead grass. If your whole lawn remains brown after being watered several times... then unfortunately, your entire yard is dead.

Dormant grass in most cases can closely resemble that of dead grass, only it's still very much alive, and shouldn't cause concern. Dormancy is a built-in, natural mechanism our yards possess to protect itself from mother nature's temper tantrums (such as subfreezing temperatures or drought-like climate). When the weather eases up, our grass gladly returns to its vibrant color with that supple texture we love frolicking through during the spring and summer months.
